Issue no.6

How newsrooms across the world are using AI

Hello and welcome...

To the new incarnation of AI in News Media. In the first five issues, we spoke to people leading the adoption and implementation of AI in newsrooms across the world, from the BBC to Hindustan Times. If you missed any of those interviews, you can read them all here. From now on, AI in News Media will still include exclusive interviews but we'll also be rounding up the most recent AI news and any developments we think might be good to know if you work in a newsroom.

This week, we are launching Bright Sites Innovation Incubator to support established and emerging media leaders. We're supporting two fully-funded scholarships for UCLan's Journalism Leaders and Innovation PGCert course in 2025.

This initiative allows recipients to develop and apply transformative ideas in journalism, working directly with Bright Sites for mentorship, resources, and hands-on experience in innovating to solve newsroom challenges.

We're always looking for ways to improve, so if there's something you want to see here you can reply to this email or get in touch on LinkedIn.

Thanks for reading,

Beth Ashton

Latest AI developments and experiments in newsrooms

  • Business Insider launched what they describe as a first-of-its-kind AI-powered search tool. It 'uses cutting-edge AI to provide readers with a fast, efficient way to discover more of our journalism'. Here's what that looks like:

  • OFF Radio Kraków launched an AI-driven experiment featuring virtual hosts which sparked backlash. The station head, Marcin Pulit, defended the changes, clarifying that no one was fired due to AI and layoffs were based on poor listenership, while Poland's digital minister called for responsible AI regulation.

  • Reach PLC Chief Digital Publisher David Higgerson spoke to Newsroom Summit about spending the last two years integrating AI at the UK's biggest commercial news publisher. “Though much of the conversation has focused on generative AI," he said. "Some of Reach’s biggest successes have come from deploying other AI technologies."
